Payment by GIRO
Is Zakat by Giro deducted in advance? Shouldn't we complete the haul (1 Hijrah year) before contributing Zakat?
The Fatwa Committee has issued the permissibility of Zakat payment by Giro. It is based on the concept of wakalah, an agent i.e. a bank deducting on behalf of Zakat payer based on the instructed Zakat amount. The Zakat payer must be of sound mind with sufficient bank balance for deduction. This advance payment does not contradict with the concept of haul (period) as Zakat can be made in advance. A Hadith as narrated by Abu Daud, Tarmizi and Ibnu Majah: "Sayuduna Abbas r.a. once asked the Messenger of Allah p.b.u.h. on the possibility of paying Zakat before its haul (time of obligation) and the Messenger of Allah p.b.u.h. acknowledged it."
What are the benefits of paying my Zakat by Giro?
It is cashless and convenient.
You can better manage and plan for your long-term assets.
How do I pay my Zakat through Giro? Every year I've paid based on the haul (period) of one year based on my Zakat due. How do I determine the amount?
First, you need to determine or estimate the Zakat that is due for the following year. For example, you will have about $96,000 of wealth. Based on 2.5% of Zakat rate, your Zakat contribution will be $2,400 (2.5% x $96,000).
For monthly Giro contribution, you will need to divide the $2,400 over a 12-month period. Hence, your average contribution is $200 per month.
Fill up the Giro form for $200 monthly deduction on your bank account. In 12 months, you will have paid $2,400. Once completed, you may submit the form to us by mail at the following address:
Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura, 273 Braddell Road, Singapore 579702
The whole process from application to the first bank deduction should be between 1 to 2 months, depending on the duration of bank approval. Incomplete submission or bank rejection may delay the process. The 1st Giro deduction will be on the 16th of the month. For failed deduction, the 2nd deduction will be on the 5th of the following month. Should the dates fall on weekend or public holiday, the deductions will be on the next working day. Notification will be given upon submission application to the bank and 1st successful deduction to highlight the beginning of your haul (period). You only need to state your Zakat intent (niat) once when you fill in the Giro form (refer to Zakat intent in the Zakat by Giro Form ). Should you make changes to your monthly deduction, you will need to make your Zakat intent on the form. Also, the minimum Giro deduction is $5 per month.
What if after the 12-month Giro deductions, my Zakat payable should be $3,000 instead of $2,400?
You can pay the under-contribution Zakat difference ($600) at haul end as a lump sum through various methods such as cash, cheque, Nets, AXS, eNets and online.
What if after the 12-month Giro deductions, I contributed more than the amount that is due for Zakat?
For over-contribution, there are two options.
Option 1: To state the intention (niat) that excess amount will be carried forward for the prepayment of Zakat for the next year.
Option 2: To state the intention (niat) that excess amount will be treated as a voluntary donation or sadaqah. If however you need to request for refund, you can fill in the Application for Refund of Zakat by Giro Form and submit to us by mail.
Will I get a receipt for my Zakat contribution through Giro?
No receipt will be issued monthly, instead we will send a statement of account at year end.
Can Zakat through Giro contribution be in IRAS Auto-Inclusion?
If one opts for Auto-Inclusion, Zakat contributed by individuals will be automatically sent to IRAS for tax deduction. For non-individuals, please declare your Zakat contribution through submission of Income Tax Return to IRAS.
Can I make changes or cancel the Giro deduction?
To make changes to your Zakat by Giro monthly deduction, please fill up the Authorisation to Change Zakat by Giro Contribution Form and submit to us by mail at the following address: Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura, 273 Braddell Road, Singapore 579702. To cancel Giro deduction for Muzakki (Zakat payer) who has passed away, the Waris (Beneficiary) can fill up the Zakat by Giro Termination Form and submit it (include a copy of death certificate) to us by mail.
