Payment by GIRO |

The Fatwa Committee has issued the permissibility of Zakat payment by Giro. It is based on the concept of wakalah, an agent i.e. a bank deducting on behalf of Zakat payer based on the instructed Zakat amount. The Zakat payer must be of sound mind with sufficient bank balance for deduction. This advance payment does not contradict with the concept of haul (period) as Zakat can be made in advance. A Hadith as narrated by Abu Daud, Tarmizi and Ibnu Majah: "Sayuduna Abbas r.a. once asked the Messenger of Allah p.b.u.h. on the possibility of paying Zakat before its haul (time of obligation) and the Messenger of Allah p.b.u.h. acknowledged it."

- First, you need to determine or estimate the Zakat that is due for the following year. For example, you will have about $96,000 of wealth. Based on 2.5% of Zakat rate, your Zakat contribution will be $2,400 (2.5% x $96,000).
- For monthly Giro contribution, you will need to divide the $2,400 over a 12-month period. Hence, your average contribution is $200 per month.
- Fill up the Giro form for $200 monthly deduction on your bank account. In 12 months, you will have paid $2,400. Once completed, you may submit the form to us by mail at the following address:
Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura, 273 Braddell Road, Singapore 579702
- The whole process from application to the first bank deduction should be between 1 to 2 months, depending on the duration of bank approval. Incomplete submission or bank rejection may delay the process. The 1st Giro deduction will be on the 16th of the month. For failed deduction, the 2nd deduction will be on the 5th of the following month. Should the dates fall on weekend or public holiday, the deductions will be on the next working day. Notification will be given upon submission application to the bank and 1st successful deduction to highlight the beginning of your haul (period). You only need to state your Zakat intent (niat) once when you fill in the Giro form (refer to Zakat intent in the Zakat by Giro Form ). Should you make changes to your monthly deduction, you will need to make your Zakat intent on the form. Also, the minimum Giro deduction is $5 per month.

Option 2: To state the intention (niat) that excess amount will be treated as a voluntary donation or sadaqah. If however you need to request for refund, you can fill in the Application for Refund of Zakat by Giro Form and submit to us by mail.
